Many technology companies invest a great deal of resources
in developing intellectual property but do far too little
to capture its value. Whether for determining the value of
the company, or simply for the use of management for
assessing the company's productivity, the process of
documenting, cataloging, and analyzing the intellectual
property created by an engineering organization is often
extremely valuable. However, it is difficult and
frequently overlooked. WiredObjects members have both the
deep technical expertise as well as the strategic
high-level view of the value of intellectual property
needed to conduct such a review sucessfully. WiredObjects
is thus uniquely positioned to help you communicate your
company's real IP value both internally and to those
skeptical outside parties who are used to empty claims of
value.
We believe that much intellectual property is never
captured because it is created by engineering staff who
may not be aware of its value. Thus, it is critically
important that the intellectual property assessment focus
both on architecture and actual engineering output
(e.g. source code, design, architecture). To that extent,
our engagements involve significant direct contact with all
members of the engineering organization, including
developers, architects, and managers. Furthermore, because
intellectual property is often best characterized within
the context in which it is built, it is also important to
involve other groups, such as product management, customer
support, and even marketing teams in this process.
The process of collecting, organizing and documenting
intellectual property is often undertaken in consideration
of an client's imminent funding event. A WiredObjects
engagement helps the client present a clear, complete, and
comprehensible view of its intellectual property to third
parties. The client will be more prepared for the due
diligence investigations and will present a better image
to those evaluating its claims of value. An intellectual
property catalog and summary will help management focus on
strategy and business issues like valuation rather than on
internal intellectual property asset discovery and
documentation.
